WINGS OF DESIRE (WIM WENDERS, 1987) - 5/5

I’m at a loss really having gone 21 years without once experiencing a Wim Wenders film. Well, Wings of Desire was the perfect start. Set in Post-War West Germany, Wenders, bar three brief shots of colour, films the first two-thirds of his film in black and white as, through a series of tracking shots and painful close ups, we focus on Bruno Ganz’s angel, desperate to be mortal and in love with a young Berliner, and his bird’s eye reality. When he finally has his wish granted and he is sent to Earth to live a mortal life, it feels as if Wenders actually INVENTED colour, your pupils dilate at the brightness and beauty. Even the Berlin Wall or colourised WWII footage is ‘beautiful’. To top it off, the mixture of Peter Falk’s performance as himself, The Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds gig and the allusions to Nietzsche are all welcome fragments of a wholly unrivalled masterpiece.
